Memberships – For Organizations

To All Organizations,

To do anything on InCK.ca, you must first become a member.

“Members” and “Groups” are treated differently on InCK.ca, so there are choices to be made when considering how you register.

So, should you create your membership as an individual – under your own name? (“Sally Smith” for example.)
Or should you create your membership under your organization’s name? (“Children’s Health Centre” for example.

Below I will lay out what I believe to be the two best options for our organizations.

Option One

Register A Membership For Yourself As An Individual, And A Second One For Your Organization.

Pros:

1) This will allow you to login as an individual, and take part in forum discussions, comment sections, other groups and projects on InCK.ca – using your own name, and not your organization’s name.

For example: If you make a comment in a discussion forum, and you have only registered a membership under your organizations name… the site will say “Children’s Health Centre commented on the forum: Great Places To Eat In Chatham-Kent”.

Of course you probably don’t want your organization’s name being used for your other activities around InCK.ca.

However, when you post a volunteer position to our Volunteer site, you’ll probably want it to say: “Children’s Health Centre created a new post on: Volunteering In Chatham-Kent”, – not using your own name.

2) Having your own personal membership allows you to create more than one group on InCK.ca as well. Some of you will be involved in more than one organization… so it will confuse readers if the site says “Children’s Health Centre created the group: The Tilbury Bowling League”. Instead it would make much more sense for “Sally Smith” (who is involved in both organizations) to be listed as the member who created the new group.

Cons:
You will have to login as an individual to participate as an individual, and use a different login to participate on behalf of your organization. (Two logins to remember.)

Option Two

Register A Membership For Yourself As An Individual, Then Create A Group For Your Organization.

Pros:

1) Only one login to remember.

2) You are now free to participate on the site any way you choose. Any posts you make on your organization’s Group will identify you by name, and not associate you with any particular organization.

Cons:

1)Your personal avatar (little photo) will be included with each post you make as an individual, as well as any postings you might make on behalf of your organization. This means that you will need to take care in choosing your avatar.

Having an image of Bugs Bunny beside postings made on behalf of your organization may not be ideal. – So if you use this membership option, you are probably limited in what you can use as your avatar.

2)Important! – It is important that you choose carefully. If you decide later on to delete your membership from InCK.ca, much of the postings you made to the site on behalf of your organization may be deleted as well!
If you DO decide you no longer wish to be an individual member of InCK.ca, but you want content you’ve posted on behalf of your organization to be deleted, please contact us to help you with your account deletion.
